SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - MAVIS
We are very sad to have to let all connected with Dove Jazz Club know of the sudden death on Monday, May 5th. of Mavis. She was taken seriously ill a few days earlier whilst on holiday in Spain and although she came home to England she was not to survive.
She was of course known to all visitors to our gigs, amongst other things not least as Joan’s willing helper in persuading one and all of the excellence of the decision to invest in the raffle tickets, and as Joan’s assistant in extracting the money.
She has been a stalwart supporter of Dove Jazz Club, along with husband Peter, for many years. The loss of her unfailingly cheerful disposition is going to be something that we know that all of us who knew her will be much the poorer for and her contribution will not be forgotten.
We offer our sincerest sympathy to Peter and all her loving family

Lu Watters last gig ?

We are indebted to Mr. Charles Campbell ( a $ 10 contributor to Bunk Johnson's teeth ! ) of San Francisco for permission to publish the above photo. This was taken at Mc Goons not long after the Blues over Bodega 1963 recording and Charles believes that it was the last occasion that Lu ever played in public. Not many knew he was coming that evening and the Club was half full. Those lucky enough to be there thought that he would just do a couple of numbers but he played full steam the whole night until 1 o'clock. With Turk at the mike is another famous man of the West Coast Revival, the "fig type disc jockey" Hal McIntyre. Hal, together with Bill Colburn and Charles' great friend Dave Stuart, were the three young Californians that joined up with Bill Russell and Eugene Williams in Louisiana to record Bunk in June 1942, and it was Hal, together with Bunk David and Bill, that was standing there to make the infamous surprise knock on George Lewis' door.
